Big Bang Chess Big Bang Chess

Best Mac OS X Product
Best Mac OS X Technology Adoption

Released May 2004
Mac OS X 10.3 Panther and above
Available free of charge
Official product page

Visually, and technically stunning, Big Bang Chess is the start of a whole new universe of casual gaming. Featuring incredibly tight integration with Apple technologies, Big Bang Chess allows you to experience the joys of casual gaming without sacrificing any of the elements that make using Mac OS X such a pleasure.

Big Bang Chess has an incredibly appealing visual interface. From the floating Splashscreen which causes new users to call their friends over to see it, to the embedded quicktime movies inside the game itself the whole experience shows an intelligence and focus on design. But the real killer feature of Big Bang Chess is it's use of Apple technology and the iApps. Casual games are not best played full screen. People like to play them while surfing, or iChatting or doing some email-- Big Bang Chess recognizes this and becomes part of their Mac OS X experience. You can effortlessly send turns back and forth via Apple's Mail.app, invite your iChat AV buddy to a match from within the game itself or just scan your local Rendevous network-- it's never been this easy. And once the game starts, tight integration into Apple's Address Book and your iTunes playlists is just what you'd hope to find, and do.

Adventures on Pirate Isle Adventures on Pirate Isle
Released November 2003
Mac OS 9, Mac OS X, Windows 98/2000/NT/XP
uDevGame 2003 Entry
Available free of charge
Official product page

On July 15, 1597 the frigate Sun Burst was wrecked upon the shoals of Pirate Isle. The only surviving crew member was a furry cheeked sailor named Slash. The adventure begins when Slash regains consciousness among the debris of his former vessel, determined to uncover the secrets of the island, its treasure, and to discover a means of returning home.

Slash is a sugar glider from the distant land of Australia. Roughly the size of a small squirrel, sugar gliders have a membranous flap of skin connecting their forepaw to their hind feet. Sugar gliders can use this layer of skin in order to glide up to 150 feet through the air, jumping from tree to tree to escape the jaws of their predators. Our hero is a sea-worthy buccaneer who wears his trusty sabre always at his side. He was a notable sailor aboard his ship, being able to leap from mast to mast seemingly without effort. During his future adventures on Pirate Isle, Slash will be able to run, jump, climb, and glide his way to and past obstacles of all kinds. When strategic maneuvers are not an option, Slash can whip out his sabre to deal death to the most fearsome of foes. Sugar gliders love fresh fruit, so finding such items along the way can rejuvenate or even grant temporary powers to our stalwart marsupial. Using his unique talents, his uncanny wit, and his deft swordsmanship Slash must travel deeper and deeper into Pirate Isle, avoiding natural predators such as sea gulls, giant crabs, and hunting cats.

Solace Review at MacGamer.com
Solace Review at Applelinks.com

Rocco Bowling and Freeverse Software teamed up to bring you Solace, a board game of ancient warfare for Windows and Macintosh. The game takes place in a period of uncertainty for the World of Solace. The Jintar Alliance, a group of three nation-states, are preparing to face off against the aggressive Red Mountain Onslaught, led a pair of greedy, bloodthirsty countries bent on conquest. This turn-based game of conquest for one to six players is reminiscent of a different era in gaming, when the best strategy games weren't on computers. Now the magic of 3d rendering and automation have brought this classic style game of conquest to Windows and Macintosh computers. If you liked Axis & AlliesTM, you'll spend hours playing Solace!

Vortex Next Generation is an exhilarating thrill ride for lovers of the breakout genre of games. Probably best described as a cross between Arkanoid and Tempest, Vortex NG breaks the "paddle and walls" barrier by allowing the paddle to rotate 360 degrees around the "blocks." Along with a slew of other features, it also supports both local and networked cooperative multiplay - something sorely lacking in other breakout-styled games.

(Ten years after the shuttle "Pathfinder" entered the black hole at Cygnus X-1 and the aliens invaded, see manual for full story)

The war with the aliens rages till, with humans losing all but their home planet, Earth. With new technology, the tides of war are shifting to favor us. Scientists have studied the alien technology which allows them transport through the mysterious black hole. Further engineering has given rise to the newest weapon to combat this menace, the hRider.

The Horizon Rider is one part of a prototype weapon to use against the alien menace. It works by riding on the multiple horizons of gravitational pull inside of the Vortex. While it cannot retreat out of the Vortex, it can advance deeper into the madness. The second piece to this weapon is the Anti-Gravity Explosive Ball (the AGEB), which the hRider's rebounder shield allows it to propel the AGEB toward enemy defenses.

Vortex was the pre-cursor to Vortex Next Generation. With 40+ levels of 360 degree fun, Vortex will keep lovers of the breakout genre of game entertained for hours.

In the darkest ages of mankind, the world was split asunder by the dark powers of Hades, the keeper of the underworld. Kingdoms by the score fell under his dark reign, the ever present gloom of his terror spreading through the known world like the plague. His undead hordes trample the defenseless, feed off of the terrified, and cut down any who oppose them.

You realize that struggle is hopeless, to strive is folly. Frightfully you cower in your royal bed chamber, feeling their rancid breath on the back of your neck. Can your armies save you? Are your strategies sound? They had better be, because death takes no prisoners.

Thrones is a real-time tactical game which features random scenario generation as well as a genetic artificial intelligence to test even the mightiest king.
